In very exciting news, Variety is reporting that Disney “is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” The series, which will be exclusive to Disney’s planned streaming service, will be centered on characters who have not appeared in their own standalone films and the report notably mentions Loki and Scarlet Witch. And yes, Tom Hiddelston and Elizabeth Olsen are planned to continue their roles as the characters! However Disney and Marvel have made no comment regarding any of this, so we currently only have Variety’s report to go on.
“The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spin-offs, such as Hiddleston and Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows” the report goes on to say. “Each series is expected to include six to eight episodes. Marvel Studios will produce the shows and Kevin Feige (Marvel Studios President) is expected to take a hands-on role in their development.”
It seems as though these new series will be treated differently to the the current Marvel series on Netflix, such as Daredevil and The Punisher, with the Netflix series set to “stay under the Marvel TV banner, with these limited series set under Marvel Studios.”
What about the big guns? Captain America, Iron Mar, Thor? The report stresses that “The Avengers that have gotten their own movies will not be featured in the series with the studios focusing on characters who have served as second tier characters in the MCU.”
This is certain to get people subscribing to the Disney streaming service once it launches, with the MCU proving to be the most dominant and consistent force in cinema history.
What characters do you want to see get their own series? Perhaps a Winter Soldier spin-off? Or the return of some villains?!
